George Henry Andrews trained as an engineer but then became an artist, specialising in watercolour, sepia and wash. During his career, he worked extensively for both the Illustrated London News and The Graphic, and it seems likely that the work offered here is the preparatory sketch for an engraving in one of these periodicals which, given the inclusion of the incomplete Great Eastern, presumably dates it to circa 1857.
