original architect drawing for a model of the Corinthian column erected in Trafalgar Square showing details of the column and capital inscribed ‘Nelson Column / Detail for Model / N13 For Statue see Mr Baily’, later dated ’29 Dec 1843’ and with stamp -- 29½ x 16½in. (75 x 42cm.) mounted and framed; together with ‘The Nelson Monument’, an original plan for an unfulfilled design for the column, with annotated measurements and inscribed ‘Traced 18th June 1841 HB’ -- 29½ x 15½in. This plan is probably taken from architect William Railton’s (1800-1877) winning submission to the Nelson Memorial Committee - headed by the Duke of Wellington – for a monument to Nelson in Trafalgar Square. The column was completed in 1843 when it was topped by a statue of Nelson by Edwin Hodges Baily (1788-1867). In 1849, bronze reliefs depicting Nelson’s victories were added to the pedestal then, in 1867, four bronze lions were mounted on the base.
