Lot 76 - A RARE R.N. SUBMARINE GROG CASK, CIRCA...

76C

[M] A RARE R.N. SUBMARINE GROG CASK, CIRCA...

A RARE R.N. SUBMARINE GROG CASK, CIRCA 1950
coopered in oak and of inverted form with brass binding, drop handles and lid with acorn handle -- 20in. (51cm.) high; 16¾in. (42.5cm.) diameter

Provenance: Stanley William 'Chimp' Clayden DSC, R.N. (1920-75) and thence by descent. Clayden was Captain of the First Submarine Squadron at H.M.S. Dolphin when grog was abolished ('Black Tot Day' was July 31st, 1970) and when this was acquired.

Despite the cramped space aboard submarines, space was made for the grog ration, served in traditional oak casks, albeit inverted to fit the hull shape more securely and with drop handles to allow for lashing to a bulkhead and carrying clear - the shape would have been quite unseaworthy on the open wave, but apparently worked well below the surface. This is a rare survivor and to date is the only example seen by these Rooms.

Sold for £930
Estimated at £600 - £800

(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)
