CHINESE SCHOOL, LATE 19TH-CENTURY
The Four-Masted Barque 'Dundonald'

A four-masted steel barque built in 1891 by Workman, Clark & Co., Belfast, her principal dimensions were 284'2" long with a 42'0" beam, draught of 24'4 and was registered at 2,205 tons. Captained by J. Pearcey, in June 1896 she sank the S.S. Santarense in a collision, fortunately with no loss of life. Sold to Kerr, Newton & Co. of Glasgow in 1900, and with a new Captain (A.B. Milne) she continued to work until March 6th 1907, when she stranded on the appropriately named Disappointment Island (Auckland Islands). A boat was made from the wreckage and four men set set off on the six mile trip to Auckland Island and returned with a larger boat to save all hands. All were finally picked up by a passing steamer and taken to New Zealand.
