The Four-Masted Barque 'Nation' Underway in the Downs off the South Foreland

Built in 1891 by the famous firm of W. Doxford and Sons, Sunderland, Nation was a four-masted steel barque measuring 294 feet by 43 feet by 24 feet and displaced 2,540 gross tons. Launched in July 1891 for William Thomas and Co. of Liverpool with Capt. Robert Wynne as master, she was one of three identical vessels built for this owner, her sisters being Republic and Dominion. On 24 March 1892 Nation left Rangoon for Bremen with a cargo of rice and disappeared. Never heard from again, it is thought she was lost in a hurricane off Mauritius.
