AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY NAVY BLUE FROCK COAT AND NAVAL WAISTCOAT
frock coat with non-regulation brass buttons, waistcoat with regulation buttons, together with a pair of flecked silk stockings
(3)
By family tradition, this ensemble belonged to Capt. Hyde John Clarke and this is supported by a mezzo tint (not included) showing a now-elderly Clark wearing the coat with a pair of epaulette's and the waistcoat. Interestingly, the coat buttons are not defined, whilst the waistcoats are, suggesting that Clarke had either re-fitted his naval coat for civilian use, or improvised with one of a suitable type for the artist. The naval flag from lot 80 is shown proudly hanging behind him.

Sold for £595
Estimated at £400 - £500
