A 1:60 SCALE BUILDER'S MODEL OF THE WOOL CLIPPER SCOTTISH MINSTREL, BUILT BY RICHARDSON, DUCK & CO. LTD, 1877
the 50in. hull with scored decks, plated and carved fittings, painted masts and yards with chains facing, cast alloy figurehead, standing and running rigging with blocks and tackle, signal hoist, contained on four columns to display base secured with anchor and studded chain, in glazed wooden case -- 43¼ x 73 x 25in. (110 x 185.5 x 63.5cm.)
The Honourable Company of Master Mariners; Restored and presented by Captain James Park, 1949.
Built for A. Cassel, Scottish Minstrel was constructed in iron and registered at 1,572 tons. Very little is known about this ship's career, except that she was never sold and was broken up in Italy in 1910. It's suggested in the provenance that the original owner, Captain Park, made this model, but the quality and level of detail suggest some confusion.
Sold for £13,020
Estimated at £6,000 - £8,000
(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)
Condition Report
Captain Park restored this model before presenting it to the Hon Company in 1949 - new, slightly amateur ships boats, painted lower masts and yard and bowsprit - the sections above, which were too complex to unmoor, have varnish separation - pls see images; he also added the signal pennants and refreshed the ships name on the stern and presumably corrected some loose lines. The hull appears to have its original finish and the decks their lacquer and good original fittings where appropriate.
