CHINESE SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY
The Iron Barque "Romsdal", A.C. Whyte, Commander

Inscribed 'A.C. Whyte / Commander' (lower middle)

Built by R. Steele of Greenock and launched in 1877, the Romsdal was registered at 1,827 tons, with an overall length of 275'9", breadth of 41' 1" and a draft of 23' 5" she was rigged with royal sails above double top and single topgallant sails. Owned by J.A. Allan of Glasgow, she was built specifically for the Indian jute trade. Under the stewardship of her first Master, J. Jarman, she made good time including 93 days from Liverpool to Chittagong on her penultimate voyage between May and August 1891. Departing Chitagong on October 31st, in company with the County of Selkirk, laden with jute intended for Dundee, Romsdal foundered on November 2nd in a tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Bengal. The County of Selkirk survived this storm, but was lost in similar circumstances just four years later.
