Part of the Third Italian War of Independence, this was the first fleet action between ironclads (and the last to deploy deliberate ramming) and was a decisive victory for an outnumbered Austrian fleet. Despite their Italian foe firing nearly 1500 shells, little damage was caused and, combined with internal Italian rivalries, Admiral Tegetthoff was able to divide and destroy his numerous opponents.
