H.M.S. FORMIDABLE: A QUANTITY OF SIGNALS AND EPHEMERA, CIRCA 1941/2 THOUGHT TO RELATE TO OPERATIONS 'TORCH' AND 'PEDESTAL'
kept by A. Eagland and comprising a diary with entries from January 1st to February 18th 1941, detailing times of blackout, daily routine, weather conditions etc., and a service book with loose enclosures comprising an unsent letter home in the event of loss, a copy of The Times of Malta, 5th August 1943, a quantity of copy naval signals on pink copy papers concerning submarine sightings, torpedoes, engagements with the enemy, vessels burning, etc., mostly dated between 1942 and 1943, with other associated ephemera and a framed official copy signal from Mountbatten announcing the surrender of Japan, dated 14 September 1945

It is understood that Eagland was a Signal Lieutenant aboard the carrier Formidable and so had access to interesting signals, which he appears to have kept for his own diversion post war. Operation 'Pedestal' was the British operation to re-supply Malta, 9-15th August, 1942; Operation 'Torch' was the British-American invasion of North Africa 8-16 November, 1942.
